On Being `undigital' with Digital Cameras: Extending Dynamic Range by Combining Differently Exposed Pictures

چکیده

Most everyday scenes have a far greater dynamic range than can be recorded on a photographic lm or electronic imaging apparatus (whether it be a digital still camera, video, etc.). However, a set of pictures, that are identical except for their exposure, collectively show us much more dynamic range than any single picture. The dark pictures show us highlight details of the scene that would be washed out in a \properly exposed" picture, while the light pictures show us some shadow detail that would also not appear in a \properly exposed" picture. We propose a means of combining diierently exposed pictures to obtain a single picture of extended dynamic range, and improved color delity. Given a set of digital pictures, we may produce a single picture which is, for all practical purposes, `undigital', in the sense that it is a oating point image, with the kind of dynamic range we are accustomed to seeing in typical oating point representations, as opposed to the integer images from which it was generated. The method is completely automatic; it requires no human intervention, and it requires no knowledge of the response function of the imaging device. It works reliably with images from a digital camera of unknown response, or from a scanner with unknown response, scanning an unknown lm type.

High dynamic range imaging for digital still camera: an overview

We present a collection of methods and algorithms able to deal with high dynamic ranges of real pictures acquired by digital engines e.g., charge-coupled device (CCD/CMOS) cameras. An accurate image acquisition can be challenging under difficult light conditions. A few techniques that overcome dynamic range limitations problems are reported. The presented methods allow the recovery of the origi...

Gradient Domain Hdr Compositing [extended Abstract]

High dynamic range (HDR) image compositing addresses dynamic range limitations by combining valid information from multiple differently-exposed low dynamic range (LDR) images. Traditional HDR methods (which we will call intensity-based) compute a weighted combination of pixel irradiance after correcting for differences in exposure. These methods require knowledge of the mapping from scene irrad...

Exposure Time Estimation for High Dynamic Range Imaging with Hand Held Camera

The limited dynamic range of a camera may be extended by composing differently exposed images of the same scene. The nonlinear camera has to be calibrated radiometrically first. We show that the calibration process can be difficult for real cameras. The improvement can be achieved if linear 12-bit RAW images are used as offered by modern mid-class and professional cameras. The knowledge of expo...

Multidimensional image enhancement from a set of unregistered and differently exposed images

If multiple images of a scene are available instead of a single image, we can use the additional information conveyed by the set of images to generate a higher quality image. This can be done along multiple dimensions. Super-resolution algorithms use a set of shifted and rotated low resolution images to create a high resolution image. High dynamic range imaging techniques combine images with di...
